Five bodies of work through which the Institute supports and strengthens the legislature in pursuit of the ideals of democratic governance.
Through research, advocacy, teaching, networking and allied activities, NILDS seeks to promote and reinforce the constitutionally assigned roles and functions of parliamentary institutions.
The Institute works to support and strengthen the legislature in pursuit of the ideals of democratic governance. Its programmes reach members and staff of the National Assembly, of the State Houses of Assembly, and of legislatures across the ECOWAS sub-region.
NILDS is increasingly building an international reputation based on the quality of its work and on a commitment to applying academic skill to real-world challenges — legislation as it is actually drafted, budgets as they are actually scrutinised.

Legislative Support Services
To ensure the quality and effectiveness of laws, NILDS is actively involved in legislative drafting, the drafting of motions and resolutions, bill analysis and scrutiny, and direct support to committees of the National Assembly.

Teaching & Research
The Institute recognises that individuals respond to different teaching and learning styles. It adopts pedagogic approaches which enable participants to be actively involved in the learning process rather than lectured at.

Training & International Cooperation
Through its training programmes, NILDS enhances the capacities of legislators and staff to become more effective in carrying out their mandate — from induction for new members to specialist modules for committee clerks.

Policy Analysis
An important objective of NILDS is the dissemination of research output, and the design and analysis of policies that could be translated into legislation or imputed into the policymaking process.

The Legislative Centre for Security Analysis
LeCeSA is the peace and security research arm of the Institute, under the National Assembly of Nigeria, supporting members and committees with analysis on national and regional security questions.
