National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy
An annual competition for senior secondary schools, run by NILDS to deepen young Nigerians' understanding of the legislature, the constitution and democratic governance. It runs in three stages — state, zonal and national.
About the Competition
The National Quiz Competition on the Legislature and Democracy is an annual civic education programme run by NILDS for senior secondary schools. It is one of the Institute's flagship programmes, created to stimulate the interest of young Nigerians in the legislature and to make them more proactive in matters of democratic governance.
The first edition was held in 2016 with schools drawn only from the Federal Capital Territory, and it ran in that form until the Institute's Governing Council directed that it be extended across the country. That expansion was achieved in 2022, when 34 states and the FCT took part, followed by 35 states and the FCT in 2023. The 9th edition, held in 2024, was the first in which all 36 states and the FCT competed.
How It Works
State Level
Two schools prequalify from each of a state's three senatorial districts, making six competing schools per state, each represented by two students. NILDS deploys two officials to every state as Quiz Master and State Coordinator, working with the State Ministry of Education and the State House of Assembly.
Zonal Level
State champions advance to zonal contests representing each of the six geopolitical zones — North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South and South West.
National Grand Finale
The six zonal champions meet in Abuja for the grand finale. Every stage is decided over three rounds of questions, with the highest cumulative score taking the title.
Who Can Participate
The competition is open to senior secondary school students from registered government and private schools in every state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
