The workshop was aimed at equipping participants with the skills to become responsible citizen journalists, empowering them to use their platforms to promote truth, accountability, and social change. It also introduced them to the principles of solution journalism, a reporting approach that not only highlights societal issues but also seeks constructive responses and solutions.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, Director General, NILDS, emphasized the crucial role of citizen journalism in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape. He noted that digital technology and social media have democratized information, enabling everyday citizens to participate in news reporting, share their perspectives, and hold institutions accountable.
