Why We Established Democracy Radio- Prof. Sulaiman

Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, the Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), announced that the establishment of NILDS’ Democracy Radio, 104.9FM, is part of an initiative to educate and raise awareness among Nigerians about the fundamental principles of democracy. This statement was made during a live interview with Mohammed Kudu Abubakar, the General Manager of the radio station, on Wednesday.

The Director General elaborated that the radio station aims to facilitate citizens’ engagement, foster a political culture, promote democratic values, and enhance governance in Nigeria. He expressed his strong conviction that the radio station, when fully utilized, will serve as a national platform to stimulate public debates, leading to increased public participation in significant decision-making processes.

He emphasized the crucial role of the media in democracy, stating that democracy relies partly on the media to provide accurate information that represents various political and public figures, thereby bridging the gap between the government and the governed.

During the interview, the former Minister of National Planning also discussed other topics, including the rationale behind establishing a Legislative Centre for Security Analysis and the Institute’s readiness to organize refresher courses for members of the 10th National Assembly.
