The Vice Chancellor, Federal University Lokoja, FUL, Professor Olayemi Akinwunmi, has encouraged new postgraduate students of the Federal University Lokoja/National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (FULOKOJA-NILDS) PhD partnership program to focus on research that will advance Nigerian society.
The Vice-Chancellor made these remarks on Tuesday in Abuja during the matriculation ceremony for 191 postgraduate students enrolled in the 2023/2024 programme.
The partnership between the two organisations
offers several PhD. programs: Peace and Conflict Studies, Election and Party Politics, Legislative Drafting, Leadership and Strategic Studies, Parliamentary Administration, Legislative Studies, and Social Work
Out of the 191 students, 131 were admitted through the FULOKOJA-NILDS partnership, while 60 were admitted through other channels.
“Today marks a significant milestone in your academic journey as you embark on the highest level of academic excellence. Pursuing this terminal degree will not only deepen your knowledge but also contribute to the betterment of our society. I urge you to embrace academic excellence, critical thinking, and innovation. May your research uncover new insights and solutions to the complex challenges we face. Congratulations on your admission to this prestigious program. You are now part of a scholarly community dedicated to making a positive impact.” He stated
While speaking, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, Director-General of NILDS, highlighted that the program, which started in August 2022, has admitted 318 students so far. NILDS, established by an Act of the National Assembly, aims to build capacity and conduct research for the legislature and other democratic institutions. Sulaiman emphasized that the PhD. program is a means to train stakeholders in enhancing governance.
“As students of our PhD. program, you are expected to apply the knowledge gained to promote good governance in your various fields. This training will position you as ambassadors of good governance. It is essential to adhere to the rules and regulations governing the FULOKOJA-NILDS PhD. program,” Sulaiman stated.
He encouraged the students to seize the opportunity to develop their skills and become experts in their respective fields.
