The Director General of National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman has joined Nigerians across the country in commemorating the 66th Independence Anniversary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In a goodwill message issued on Thursday, 1st October 2026, the Director General reflected on Nigeria’s 66 years of independence, describing it as a testament to the resilience of the Nigerian people and the enduring efforts of successive administrations to advance on the vision and aspirations of the nation’s founding fathers.
While aligning with this year’s theme: “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity,” he called for unity, inclusivity, and a collective participation in nation-building. He emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity across gender, ethnicity, region, and religion should remain a source of strength rather than division.
The former Minister of National Planning noted that, at NILDS, issues relating to national cohesion, gender inclusivity, unity, economic development and legislative governance remain central to the Institute’s efforts in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance and advancing sustainable national development.
Prof. Sulaiman congratulated the leadership of the Three Arms of government, particularly His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON and the Speaker House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, GCON on the Independence Anniversary.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to the Nigerian project, uphold national unity, and contribute actively in addressing the Nation’s security and developmental challenges. He acknowledged that while the nation may not have attained all its aspirations, Nigeria has continued to evolve and strengthen its democratic institutions. He therefore called on citizens to sustain their faith in the nation, embrace patriotism and collective responsibility, and remain actively engaged in building a peaceful, inclusive, prosperous, and United Nigeria.
The Director General of NILDS wishes all Nigerians a peaceful and restful Independence Day celebration and prays for continued peace, stability, and progress for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
