In its ongoing effort to instill democratic principles in young Nigerians attending secondary school, the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) has launched its annual quiz competition.
The initial phase of the eighth edition of this competition was conducted nationwide on Thursday,12th October, 2023, with the primary goal of continuously educating students about the Legislature. This aims to broaden their understanding of the history, procedures, and practices of the Legislature, ultimately enhancing their comprehension of civic and democratic governance.
This quiz competition, originally introduced by the Institute in 2016, initially involved schools exclusively from the Federal Capital Territory. However, it has since become an annual event, thanks to the directive of the Institute’s Governing Council, led by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Council recommended extending the competition to encompass the entire country.
During the opening ceremony, Professor Abubakar O. Sulaiman, the Director General of NILDS, urged participating students and their educators to adhere to the competition’s rules with a true sense of sportsmanship. This approach would help prevent any interference and enable the competition to realize its intended objectives.
In Plateau state, Government Model Secondary School Shendam emerged as the winner, while the School for the Gifted Gwagwalada secured victory in Abuja. Additionally, Bright Future Secondary School in Adamawa state earned the opportunity to represent their state at the upcoming zonal competition scheduled for November 2nd, 2023.
Other winning schools include Ilorin South Government Secondary School in Kwara State, Pen Resources Academy in Gombe, Gombe State, Government Girls Secondary School Ogoja in Cross River State, Vickayor Private School in Ile-Ife, Osun State, and Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha, Anambra State, among others.
