National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS has organised a 3-day training workshop for clerks and legislative officers of the local government area councils of Taraba state.
The workshop aimed at enhancing the capacity of the participants is part of measures to strengthen local government administration to support balanced and sustainable development in Nigeria.
Prof. Abubakar O.Sulaiman, DG NILDS, while Inaugurating the workshop, noted that the task of transforming local government administration as an effective third tier of government will guarantee accountability and transparency in Nigeria.
According to him, for Nigeria to tackle the enormous task of transforming local government administration as an effective third tier of government that will guarantee accountability and transparency in Nigeria, the need for training and retraing especially the legislative bureaucracy cannot be overemphasised.
“Indeed, scholars and practitioners have over the years identified capacity deficiency, technical know-how deficits, weak institution, financial challenges, and overwhelming corruption as major challenges confronting the effective performance of local governments in Nigeria
“To us at NILDS, the effective and efficient performance of the legislature depends to a large extent on the capacity of the legislators, legislative aides and legislative staff to carry out their functions optimally” he stated.
