National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS has organised
a 3-day capacity building workshop on legislative processes and innovative policy strategies for councillors of local government legislative councils of Lagos State.
The training workshop meant to equip participants with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience needed to support the effective and efficient running of the affairs of the local governments was held in Abuja last week.
While speaking at the closing ceremony,
Prof. Sulaiman described the training workshop as apt and timely, given the ongoing conversation on local government autonomy in Nigeria.
“This training workshop is apt and timely, considering the ongoing conversation on local government autonomy in Nigeria.
“Therefore the need to enhance the capacity of the officials at the local government level cannot be overemphasized
“This is because the officials are expected to be in charge of policies initiative resource allocation, citizens’ mobilisation, peace and conflict resolution among other critical roles.
“In addition to ensuring that the benefits of the Local Government Autonomy currently being supported by the National Assembly and other democratic actors,” he said.
He maintained that NILDS is at the forefront of developing Nigeria’s local governments’ human resource capacities.
