Climate Change: Prof. Sulaiman Calls for National Climate Change Laws to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Africa.

The Director General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies NILDS, Prof. Abubakar O.Sulaiman has urged African leaders to enact national climate change laws aimed at reducing carbon emissions across the continent.

Speaking at the 2nd West African Parliamentarian Regional Meeting on Strengthening Capacity of National Parliaments on Oversights in Climate Action Accountability and Reporting, held on Wednesday in Monrovia, Prof. Sulaiman emphasized the need for a collective commitment to combat climate change.

He warned that without significant efforts to reduce carbon emissions, both present and future generations will face increasingly difficult living conditions.

According to him, the enactment of national climate change laws is crucial for the reduction of carbon emissions in Africa.

“It is imperative that we, as a continent, commit to this cause to ensure a sustainable future for our people.” He stated.

Speaking further, he noted tha national climate change commitments are better implemented if anchored on legislation than if left to the political will of policy alone.

“With climate change legislation, however, countries would also have better implementing and coordinating mechanisms on climate change that would be domiciled under a specific ministry or agency”. He said.

The Regional Meeting organized by AGNES, in collaboration with the Institute, was attended by several notable figures, including Hon. Julius Gbabojor Pondi, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment; Hon. Saba Ahmed Adamu, Member of the House Committee on Agriculture and Production Services; and Mr. Kwame Ababio, Representative of the African Union Development Agency, among others
