Dg Nilds, Prof. Sulaiman Calls for Strengthened Maritime Safety Measures

The Director General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, Professor Abubakar O. Sulaiman, has urged stakeholders in Nigeria’s blue and maritime sector to develop robust strategies that enhance maritime safety and drive sustainable economic growth.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja at the opening of a policy dialogue on Harnessing the Potentials of the Blue and Marine Economy, organized by NILDS, Sulaiman underscored the importance of leveraging marine resources for national development. He highlighted how countries such as Singapore, Norway, and the United States have successfully integrated their blue economies into national economic frameworks, leading to significant GDP growth while maintaining environmental sustainability.

Citing data from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Sulaiman outlined the vast opportunities within shipping, maritime trade, and offshore activities, which, if properly harnessed, could substantially boost Nigeria’s economic development. However, he noted that despite some progress, the sector remains vulnerable to global challenges, as highlighted in the 2024 Maritime Day discussions. These challenges include maritime security risks, environmental concerns, and the urgent need for sustainable shipping practices.

He urged stakeholders to engage constructively and propose innovative solutions, assuring that NILDS would ensure the dialogue’s recommendations inform legislative actions and policy decisions.

The policy dialogue brought together key stakeholders in the sector, including representatives from the Ministries of Power, Marine and Blue Economy, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, Nigeria Shipper’s Council among others.
