Legal Officers on Legislative Drafting

National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS has commenced a three-day capacity building workshop for legal officers and drafters from state houses of assembly and the ministry of justice in Nigeria.

The workshop aimed at enhancing the “Effective Legislative Drafting System for Quality Law Making in Nigeria.”” commenced on Wednesday.

While declaring the event open, in his address, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman DG NILDS, underscored the Institute’s dedication to fortifying the capabilities of legislative bodies and democratic institutions across all levels of government federal, state, and local. He highlighted the importance of such collaborations in improving legislative efficiency and effectiveness.

“The importance of legislative drafting as the foundation of our laws can not be overemphasized. Legislative drafting takes place at the stage when legislative policy is to be translated into legal framework or where a fresh law is required that is not regulated by any policy. ”

“Legislative drafting is also required for amendment of existing legislation. It is concerned with the preparation of the legislative text in the appropriate form so that it gives effect to the policy as a coherent part of the written law of the legal system. If the drafting is faulty, then the quality of the subsequent law to be enacted will be defective and ineffective. ” He stated.
